Geothermics in Basin Analysis focuses on the study of sedimentary basins, stressing essential parts of problems in which geothermics is involved. Subject matter includes the measuring of temperature logs and capturing of industrial temperature data and their interpretation to delineate subsurface conditions and processes, the importance of porosity and pore filling for modeling thermal fields, the thermal insulation of shales, geothermal anomalies associated with mud diapirs and basin hydrodynamic regimes, temperatures related to magmatic underplating and plate tectonics.

This volume is a compendium of papers on the subject, as noted in the book title, of modeling and mapping. They were presented at the 25th Anniversary meeting of the International Association for Mathematical Geology (IAMG) at Praha (Prague), Czech Republic in October of 1993. The Association, founded at the International Geological Congress (IGC) in Prague in 1968, returned to its origins for its Silver Anniversary celebration. All in all 146 papers by 276 authors were offered for the 165 attendees at the 3-day meeting convened in the Hotel Krystal. It was a time for remembrance and for future prognostication. The selected papers in Geologic Modeling and Mapping comprise a broad range of powerful techniques used nowadays in the earth sciences. Modeling stands for reconstruction of geological features, such as subsurface structure, in space and time, as well as for simulation of geological processes both providing scenarios of geologic events and how these events might have occurred. Mapping stands for spatial analysis of data, a topic that always has been an extremely important part of the earth sciences. Because both modeling and mapping are used widely in conjunction, the book title should reflect the close relation of the subjects rather than a division. Here, we bring together a collection of papers that hopefully contribute to the growing amount of knowledge on these techniques.

This study was conceived while I was a research assistant in the Department of Development Economics at the University of Heidelberg. The atmosphere there stimulated my interest in the increasing importance of the instimtional dimension of development administration. Since the smdy consists of both theoretical and empirical data, a large number of very different people have helped me to successfully complete the project. For the theoretical parts and the overall framework I am indebted to my advisor Prof. Bruno Knall, Dr. Hans Christoph Rieger, and my colleague Karl Ludwig Brockmann of the Department of Development Economics. In der Offentlichkeit dominiert ein allgemeines Unverstandnis uber die hohen und auch in Krisenzeiten scheinbar weiter wachsenden Gehalter der deutschen Top Manager. Dabei haben nicht nur die Vorstande selber, sondern mehrere Interessengruppen unterschiedlichste Anspruche an die Ausgestaltung dieser Entlohnung. Die Hauptfunktion der Vorstandsvergutungen ergibt sich aus ihrer Notwendigkeit als Anreiz, wie sie sich aus personalwissenschaftlicher Sicht im Wesentlichen aus der Prinzipal Agenten Theorie ableiten lasst. Fur eine konkrete Ausgestaltung in Form eines Vergutungssystems stehen unterschiedliche Komponenten zur Verfugung, wobei im Rahmen dieser Betrachtungen der Schwerpunkt auf variablen Instrumenten und Komponenten liegt. Die komplexen Determinanten, Bedenken und Interdependenzen, die bei der Entwicklung eines solchen Vergutungssystems eine Rolle spielen, werden ebenfalls erlautert. Unter dem Eindruck der offentlichen Debatte konnen bei einer Betrachtung dieser Thematik ethische Aspekte nicht ignoriert werden. Auch wenn eine konkrete Losung der Bedenken hinsichtlich der Angemessenheit und Entlohnungsgerechtigkeit nicht angeboten werden konnen, so werden doch einige interessante Ansatze prasentiert und diskutiert, die sich dieser Thematik angenommen haben. Um die Umsetzung der theoretischen Modelle und Ansatze in der Praxis bewerten zu konnen wurden anhand der Geschaftsberichte der vier DAX-30-Aktiengesellschaften Allianz, Deutsche Bank, Fresenius und Siemens die unterschiedlichen Vergutungsmodelle analysiert und bewertet. Schwerpunkt wurde hierbei auf die variable Vergutung gelegt, da diese zum einen ca. 70% der gesamten Vergutung ausmacht und sich zum anderen von der festen Verg

The VI. International Workshop on Physics of Nonideal Plasmas (PNP VI) took place from November 18th to 21th, 1991, in Gosen (Germany) at the Science communication & Conference Centre of the Humboldt University of Berlin. The workshop was organized by the Institute for Theoretical Physics of the Humboldt University and by the Central Institute of Electron Physics, Berlin, with financial support given by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, Bonn, and the Robert-Bosch-Stiftung, Stuttgart. The workshop was attended by more than 100 scientists from 14 countries who presented about 120 papers, including 18 invited lectures. The series of PNP workshops, which started in 1980, provides a biennial forum for both experimental and theoretical research in the field of nonideal plasmas. These meetings are organized alternately by the Central Institute of Electron Physics, Berlin, and/or by one of the universities of Berlin, Greifswald, and Rostock. They took place in Matzlow-Garwitz (1980), Wustrow (1982 and 1988), Biesenthal (1984), and Greifswald (1986). Since the beginning, the workshop has been concerned mainly with fundamental studies of the thermodynamic, transport, and radiative properties of nonideal plasmas. These fields were also covered at PNP VI in Gosen, but new topics such as high-pressure laser plasmas, dense astrophysical plasmas, molecular dynamics and Monte-Carlo results, and the kinetics of transitions have completed the programme. In particular, several papers addressed the role of nonideal plasmas for radiation sources, for inertial confinement fusion, for helio-seismology, and for the determination of the structure of the giant planets.
